Waste and resource management workshops in Ankara

The Danish Environmental Protection Agency and the Royal Danish Embassy in Turkey arranged three full days workshop in Ankara focusing on waste, wastewater and sludge management together with the Turkish Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, whom hosted the event. The aim of the workshops was to share knowledge regarding best practices in waste and resource management. Technical experts travelled from Denmark to relate their experiences and expertise in their respective fields with the objective to assist sustainable development in Turkey.

The workshop was attended by delegations from different parts of Turkey, and represented an array of public and private institutions. Their contribution illustrated the variety of challenges experienced by the sector. The Danish experts represented several professional backgrounds to provide insight into possible solutions. The engagement between such a diverse representation resulted in an advanced and in-depth debate of the resource management agenda relevant for both Turkey and Denmark. 

The focus of the first day of the workshop was waste management and raising public awareness on waste handling. The framework of the Danish waste management system and waste prevention strategies was presented. Furthermore, Danish municipal representatives shed light on how to increase public awareness about waste handling and recycling by creative and communitive approaches.


The two following days were focused on industrial wastewater and sludge management including phosphorus recovery. The experts shared knowledge on how both countries approach the systems, regulations and the implementation of these differently and discussed the similarities. Furthermore, the issues of sludge management were reviewed, where the Danish approach represented sludge as not only an environmental challenge but also a potential resource.

The workshops provided the participants with insights into Danish approaches and lessons learned within waste, wastewater and sludge management. The objective of the Danish-Turkish cooperation within waste, wastewater and sludge management is to support the sustainable growth in Turkey. The key components within the SSC project is to share knowledge of possible obstacles and the solutions, which is why these workshops represent a crucial part of the SSC activity plan.
